Our Vision

Our History
Peter Bernstein founded The Journal of Portfolio Management (JPM) in 1974 to fill a gap in the market – Institutional Investor Magazine was “too lighthearted” and at that time a lot of the theoretical research was published by the Financial Analyst Journal. Bernstein desired to launch a journal that fills the gap between profound theory and light journalism. He intended The Journal of Portfolio Management to be a communications platform for practitioners, academics, regulators and clients that allows them to debate current topics in finance. Bernstein as the editor solicited every article of the first issue and was able to attract big names such as Paul Samuelson and Fisher Black. The journal had to be (and still is) easily readable, written in simple sentences and very little syllables per word.
In 1987, Frank J. Fabozzi has taken on the role of editor in chief in leading the journal’s transition from print to digital. Frank J. Fabozzi and Institutional Investor Journals celebrated his 30-year anniversary in April 2017 in New York, NY.

Over the last 40 years, the banking landscape evolved dramatically and a lot of special disciplines developed. While JPM covers mainly general topics, Institutional Investor Journals launched 11 and counting new journals with more specific themes. Each journal focuses on a component of the asset allocation and represents a discipline within institutional portfolio management.
